The U.S. Dollar for centuries has been known as the most valuable currency across the world. In recent years, there has been a shift in value when it comes to how other nations value the dollar. Recently, there has been talk From the BRICS nations about developing a new currency to rival the United States’ power in economic domination. The BRICS nation made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South America are motivated to change their currency due to the power the United States hold on the global economy. The threat of a new currency has started to cause a rise across the country. A collapse of the dollar means that the dollar would not be tradable in countries like China where a lot of the products come from. If the United States faces a dollar collapse, we will start to see the effects immediately because we will have no outside income which in turn will cause prices to go up. In a society where our gas prices are already at an all-time high a national dollar collapse could raise the prices to an unlivable rate for middle and lower-class communities.
The effects of the dollar collapsing have already started to spill over into other countries. Take Mexico for example, where it used to be if you brought one U.S. dollar to exchange you would get around 25 pesos which could buy you a lot. Now if you trade in a dollar, you will only get around 16 pesos back which can get you candy. The dollar-losing value in countries like Mexico is starting to cause a turnover in families moving back to their native countries. Alondra Loya, a student here at GCCC, who goes back to visit her family in Chihuahua Mexico multiple times a year states “Prices are so high here in the United States, it’s not even worth living here when you take a majority of the money made in this country here back to your family in Mexico. At this point, it makes more sense to get whatever degree I want here in the United States and go back to Mexico and get paid more”. Alondra and her family and among the many families that no longer gain any benefits for living in the United States. Over time our country will start losing upcoming workers because of the increasing prices and revenue that those individuals bring in.
