This year’s first Student Government event was hosted on Labor Day, September 4th right behind the Beth Tedros Center by the Volleyball court. The SGA Committee provided games such as corn hole, volleyball, and Spike Ball. The quiz bowl team and PTK also showed up and provided snacks and sidewalk chalk. There was a slow start to the event based on many factors including the heat and marketing. The weather was another complication that factored into the outcome of the event. When the games started the temperature was at a whopping 101 degrees which made it hard to keep people. PR representative Jessica Boutdara of the SGA states,
“We could have had better marketing. It was nice that there was a water fountain next to the door It could have gone bad without it. But in the future, we should make sure that we have access to it from the start of the event.” Boutdara said. The event was a last-minute decision based on the sudden resignation of Student Government Association Sponsor Brittney. Usually, these types of events are inherently planned weeks before they take place. It was SGA’s main priority to make sure that on-campus students had some form of a welcome-back event.
The SGA and the other clubs did their best to put together what they could and in the shortest amount of time. Eventually, after the day cooled off a bit more people started to show up which started to bring everything together. When The Girls Basketball team came to the event there was definitely a lot more of a competitive tone to the event. From an intense tournament of corn hole, the tension of competition started to arise. Especially when it comes to beach volleyball, a team divided is still a team nonetheless. The girls’ basketball team still cheered each other on from opposite sides of the net. There was also the SGA staff that littered the sidewalks with art and song quotes. Even though the turnout wasn’t as expected It was still truly satisfying seeing different students come together and enjoy a friendly game of volleyball. The night might have ended with no defined score, but for sure ended with smiles and good memories that could last a lifetime. In the future SGA plans on going harder on the advertising to make sure that more students are aware of the events on campus.
