Have you ever been to Boo! at the Zoo? The Lee Richardson Zoo, located in Garden City, celebrates Halloween every October. Boo! at the Zoo is an annual event that allows the community to come together and have some fun. There are not many opportunities in Garden City to embrace the popular topics and themes that make Halloween well, Halloween.
Leading up to the event families are welcome to purchase tickets at various stores around the town to attend the annual Boo! at the Zoo for just five dollars. If tickets are not purchased beforehand, attendees can purchase tickets for ten dollars at the door.
Children and adults of all ages are encouraged to dress for the early Halloween celebration in their preplanned Halloween costumes. Once inside the zoo, attendees can walk around the zoo late in the day as it is decorated according to the Halloween theme. Meanwhile, organizations and businesses work collaboratively to celebrate inside the zoo as they decorate their booths with their chosen themes. This event highlights all the creativity in our community and not just through traditional costumes.
Alongside organizations, Lee Richardson Zoo’s very own Safari Shoppe brought out the ice cream and snacks that have become must-haves during line waiting. In addition to the snacks, Safari Shoppe employees pulled the train out of the garage for children and parents to venture around the zoo for one last time before the weather became inclement.
“This was my first time attending Boo! at the Zoo in almost a decade. I definitely have a much bigger appreciation for the event knowing how much work goes into making it all happen,” Cesar Morales, Safari Shoppe employee, said.
All in all, the hard work from Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo, Safari Shoppe staff, business owners and local clubs went a long way. Unity of the community truly builds memories for young children and families. If you did not have the chance to attend this year’s annual Boo! in the Zoo, I recommend that you give the event a try next year. Don’t be embarrassed, Halloween celebration is for everybody.
