Garden City Community College has always strived to provide amazing opportunities to its students while also aiming to benefit the larger Garden City community. To do this, many events have been scheduled throughout the year to provide these benefits for students to contribute to the community, and next week, the community college will be hosting the American Red Cross for their annual blood drive.
“The annual Blood Drive has become a duty and expectation of the College Health staff,” Patricia Miller, GCCC campus nurse said. The blood drive has become a tradition for GCCC now, having been hosted for over several decades now. The arrangements and planning for the blood drive started all the way back in November of last year when the American Red Cross Account Manager, Hailey Murray was contacted to arrange the date and time.
“The community benefits from the blood donations that are received, as blood will be available when it is needed,” Miller said. The blood drive is set to provide services for both blood and Power Red donations. Regular blood donations will take a pint of blood from the body and take approximately an hour to complete. Power Red donations on the other hand are another elective type of donation that, unlike giving blood, only means to take a certain number of red blood cells instead of all the parts of the body that make up blood.
“The Annual Blood Drive is good for both GCCC and well as the local community. It provides an opportunity for students to learn about blood drives, donate blood, or become a volunteer to help the day of the drive in the reception, escort, or canteen areas,” said Miller. The blood drive will begin on Wednesday, February 12th starting at 9 a.m. up until 1 p.m. It will be hosted in the gym at the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex with many students from GCCC programs such as GC3 Media, HALO, and Athletic Training offering their help as volunteers.
