Yellowjackets is a series that follows a girls’ high school soccer team after their plane to nationals unexpectedly crashes. Each episode is split into two different segments. One is set in the 90s following the girls as they explore and try to survive the harsh wilderness. Similar to Lord of The Flies, we get to see how the isolation and savagery of the forest affect the group of survivors, and as they attempt to make it day by day slowly begin to lose their humanity and innocence. The other half of each episode is however set in our modern time of the 2020s following the remaining few survivors of the crash in their everyday lives, seeing how the traumatic events they went through have affected them for over 20 years.
Since its release in late 2021, the series was met with a very positive response both by critics and audiences alike. The series’ balance of mystery and the supernatural is helped out by its cast made up of famous young actors from the 90’s such as Christina Ricci garnered the show a lot of popularity. So much so that it was nominated for six Primetime Emmy awards for its first season. While its second season back in 2023 was released to a much more mixed response from fans, it seems as if the show has finally found its footing again with its third season.
The show made its return this month on Valentine’s Day dropping its first two episodes on both Showtime and Paramount+ simultaneously. Picking off right after the end of the dramatic winter based second season, we are reintroduced to the characters in both timelines with a series refresh in the springtime. With the newer environments and characters introduced to the series, there is a lot more room to take the plot in new directions especially now that it has been established that no character is safe no matter how prominent they are.
The premiere of season 3 was reported to have a new ratings high for the series overshadowing its second season premiere of 2 million viewers by an apparent 58%. The show has seemingly continued to advance its following especially after season one was brought to Netflix in October of 2024. The show continues to air new episodes every week on Showtime and Paramount+ every Friday so there is still time to bring yourself up to catch up and bring yourself up to date with the series.
