Who is Timothée Chalamet? Trying to avoid the difficult pronunciation, many people like to call him “Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend,” “the hot guy,” “the new Wonka,” “the baby face from Hollywood…” I prefer “the man who is in pursuit of greatness.”
Despite losing the Oscar for best actor last Sunday, Chalamet is shown as one of the top actors in our generation. Not only because he won the same award given by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) a couple weeks ago, but also because of his words after receiving that recognition. After the typical greetings, he dared to say the following in front of all of Hollywood:
“I know we are in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats,” Chalamet said.
For many, this speech is nothing more than the words of an arrogant actor whose fame has gone to his head but I disagree. I sincerely believe that it is admirable that such a young actor, after playing an American icon like Bob Dylan, publicly states his intentions to the entire film industry. I do not remember anyone in the entire history of cinema saying anything like that, Chalamet himself admits it in his words.
“It is a subjective business,” Chalamet said.
In my opinion that does not mean that one cannot set their own goals; objectives that make us want to surpass ourselves in order to perform better in our work. The young actor from New York also knows this, and not only does he make it noticeable, but he shows it when he realizes that he is being seen by the whole world.
To be honest, a few years ago I could not stand him. There was a time when I hated that we only saw him doing similar roles. The handsome young man who suffers from some difficulty and who just knows how to romanticize and give a minimum of sensitivity to his character. That is over. His performance in A Complete Unknown may not have won him an Oscar, but it did help him make it clear to us what he really wants to do.
For the ones who have not seen his movies, do not wait until tomorrow! We can find him in commercial films such as Wonka or the magnificent Dune saga by Denis Villeneuve. But Chalamet’s career goes far beyond that. We must not forget his small role as the boy in Interstellar, or his outstanding performance as Elio in Call Me by Your Name, or my favorite of all his interpretations, Laurie in Little Women. Not only we see such good movies on the screen with these artworks, but we also find PASSION for cinema in them, and that’s partly thanks to the great Timothée Chalamet. It is exciting to think that we have so much talent left to enjoy in the future, starting with the release of the third part of Dune in 2026, for which, if all goes well, he can take the grand prize.
Watch movies and form your own opinion about them. After this it only remains to say that I believe in Timothée Chalamet, I believe in his goals and I believe in his roles. In short, I believe in his greatness.
