April is a month full of spring flowers, rain showers and Easter egg hunts but it also is a time to spread awareness for Sexual Assault and prevention. This movement’s official color is teal, which was put into action in 2000. Like other sources of awareness, teal is represented throughout April. Wearing vibrant variations of teal and hanging up ribbons is a way to show an understanding of the issue and support in willingness to create a change.
During the month of April there are some exciting and sensitive activities going on at Garden City Community College (GCCC).
Starting the month off strong, GCCC is encouraging all students and staff to wear the color teal on April 1st to show support for the survivors of sexual assault and to spread as much awareness as possible. GCCC will also be hosting an event called ‘Consent is a Vibe – Make Sure You Catch It’ on April 9th from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The event will be held in Saffell Library on campus, where free snacks and pizza will be provided. The event will hold a conversation to students about sexual assault awareness as well as the importance of consent. The goal of this is to educate as many people as possible and to encourage people. All messages portrayed are in hopes of creating a change as big as possible.
The moto for this year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month is ‘Together We Act, United We Change.’ This is a huge reminder to the entirety of the community that to change something this big and severe, everyone is needed!
