Seven years ago, Buffalo Dunes Golf Course experienced its first big change. Under direction of the course staff, the front and back nine were swapped. Hole ten became hole one and vice versa. This modification marked the beginning of the course’s entire renovation.
During the past seven years the maintenance staff on the course redesigned greens, tee boxes and fairways. All greens are completely different than they were before. The maintenance staff also removed over a hundred trees around the course.
The most recent renovations to be mentioned are on both the front and back nine. Holes four, nine, eleven, twelve and thirteen were all under construction at the same time for nearly six months.
Hole fours green was completely reconstructed and shifted to the left to lengthen the short par five. Hole nine also received a complete green reconstruction as well as a fairway shift to the left.
Meanwhile on the back nine, a little more complex renovation took place. Originally, hole eleven was a short uphill par four. To add more difficulty to the course, the green was moved further back to lengthen the hole. Previously, hole twelve was a par four with a moderately sized pond to the right. Staff drained the pond and constructed the hole into a downhill par three. To recoup from shortening, past par three, hole thirteen was elongated into an uphill par four with tricky sand bunkers surrounding the green.
This totals out to thirteen actual holes golfers were able to play, tee box to green. Although, lacking eighteen complete holes, Buffalo Dunes Golf Course’s round average remained the same. Tournaments were adjusted and both merchants and ladies league adapted to the lack of holes.
Daily members and reoccurring golfers at Buffalo Dunes have strived through the duration of all of the troublesome course renovations. In retrospect, the unsuitable conditions of the course were well respected for years, as soon all eighteen holes will be enjoyable to play once again after a long time.
