Students being able to voice their opinions and needs on a college campus is crucial to an interactive student experience. Here at Garden City Community College, they take pride in allowing students’ voices to be heard. Due to this being such an important role on a functioning campus, GCCC utilizes an organization called the Student Government Association, also referred to as SGA to help be the voices of the student body.
Each year this group consists of different students each holding a specific title; those roles being the President (Raquel Cuevas), the Vice President (Reyna Garcia), the Treasurer (Ty Scheler), the Secretary (Veronica McCallum), and Public Relations (Kamdyn Carr).
Together this team helps brainstorm events to put on throughout campus, teams up with numerous organizations in the community, and works on projects in hopes of making campus a more interactive and involving place for students. At the Student Organizations and Clubs event during the first week of classes, SGA had a booth to give out prizes and get students familiar with what SGA is. Later, that week, SGA attended and helped put together gift baskets for the Friday Night Parking Lot Party, which was a huge hit!
The executive SGA committee withholds weekly meetings to plan and coordinate events, plan collaborations with different clubs, and create goals for the school year. In addition to those meetings, the committee puts on all club and organization meetings, and they attend board meetings to inform the board of their big monthly plans. The Student Government Association is an organization full of leadership and determination, people eager to make a difference.
If you are interested, you should definitely submit your application to be on the executive team next year or even ask about how you can be an At-Large member today. If students are interested in sharing their ideas with SGA, they can reach out to [email protected].
