One of the best parts of becoming a buster here at the community college is the vast array of clubs and organizations that are provided on campus. Each organization provides a chance for students to find or further develop different hobbies and interests within them. One of the newest clubs coming into Garden City Community College is Buster Cru.
Buster Cru is a brand-new, student-led Christian organization that began operations this year. The organization strives to explore students’ faith and develop their relationship with God. The club is founded and sponsored by Jodie Tewell, executive assistant to the president of GCCC, and Adele Waugh, secretary of the JCVT building.
“I talked to Tammy Tabor to see if we could have another SGA-associated faith-based group,” Jodie Tewell said about the group.
Buster Cru is actually not the first faith-based group for students, as Christian Challenge, which is a part of First Southern Baptist Church, is also a group here in Garden City. However, Buster Cru is special as it is associated with the SGA, which allows it to be integrated with the college and SGA-sponsored events.
“I wanted students here at the community college to have a place to talk and have an easily accessible faith-based group,” Tewell said.
Some activities that Buster Cru takes part in are the weekly bible study, working on discipline and building leadership skills. As the group continues to grow, however, there are plans for other potential projects and ways that Buster Cru is wanting to do to help the community.
“We want to be able to uphold the messages from the bible and be able to help our community. We plan to do things like go visit the retirement homes and just attempt to really give back to the community,” Tewell mentioned.
There are other plans on campus as well that Buster Cru is attempting to achieve in the near future, such as organizing potential movie nights as well as teaming up with SGA and other associated organizations to hang up lights and decorate the quad for the festive holiday season. The biggest of these plans is also to potentially team up with the First Southern Baptist Church and Christian Challenge to host a Christian concert at the college.
Buster Cru has only just begun and has the potential to blossom into a great staple of the GCCC community. Buster Cru holds meetings every Thursday in the ACAD building at 6:30 pm. They can also be found on Instagram at gcccbuster.cru.
