Mexican Independence Day is celebrated each September 16th. In the past, the Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO) at Garden City Community College (GCCC) has celebrated this day with various activities.
Today in the quad, from 11am-1pm, HALO celebrated Mexican Independence with different kinds of drinks, chips and fruit cups that could be topped with chamoy and tajin.
“I feel like to other people, it goes a long way, our parents have eaten foods like this during their childhood. A bite from a snack goes a long way. I feel like all of us that are Hispanic love to express our love with food,” Naomi Barraza and Elyanah Roldn, HALO members, said.
The correlation of food and heritage proves itself to be significant throughout representation of various cultures. Celebration is important for all demographics in any given community but HALO does not forget to highlight significance in any Hispanic culture. This group allows students to be proud and remember their roots in a shared environment.
“We are all honestly just so proud of everyone in this group because they’re not embarrassed where they came from. Coming from different cultural backgrounds to the United States, whether it’s us or our parents there may be instances where one of us struggles with discrimination. In communities like these, we are proud to show our culture,” Roldn said.
HALO at GCCC will remain to be a strong group that will always know how to celebrate any occasion. In addition to celebrations, the group itself allows students to freely express themselves on any given day especially ones like these.
