As Halloween is rolling right around the corner, candy is lining the shelves and holiday celebrators are challenged with the ultimate decision. What candy do they buy for trick-or-treaters but also for themselves? Some people will choose typical chocolate based candies, others will choose sour candies but others will choose candy corn. There are two types of people in the world: ones who love candy corn and those who violently hate it. This theory strikes the thought of what truly makes people a candy corn lover or hater.
To begin with, candy corn, made of sugar, corn syrup, honey and salt, was invented in the 1880s by George Renninger. With a timeline established, maybe it is safe to say that people have outgrown the candy over the past one hundred and forty-five years and that is okay.
Others might argue that candy corn has an unenjoyable waxy and chalky texture that reminds them of a candle. The taste is also a conflict in this candy. Some argue that it is too sweet and it is like getting punched in the face by corn syrup. In the candies defense, there should never be a consumption of such that reaches that extent.
In contrast, candy corn is savored through its sweet and simplistic flavor. Not to mention that the candy itself brings a sense of nostalgia to surface. But also, the yellow, white and orange color highlights a Halloween aesthetic that brings a festive vibe.
It is human nature to snack on a sweet treat during the last few months of the year. It’s time to acknowledge and honor the corn known for its controversial history. Go buy a bag of candy corn and learn to savor the delectable treat.
