Film Review: “Leave The World Behind”

“Leave the world behind.” Julia Roberts said this exact line in her role as Amanda in the movie Leave the World Behind. The movie is about a family as they go on an abrupt vacation at Amanda’s request. During that vacation, they are caught in an unexpected disaster as all communication is cut off to the whole world. The movie brings two families together who are complete strangers to a home as they are stuck trying to figure out what exactly is going on in the world. As they are trying to figure out what’s going on multiple other problems happen along the way such as one of the kids getting very sick or even losing a child as she wanders off. This is a good movie that will keep you on your toes as well as get your mind thinking about what is going on or even what is going to happen next. There are a bunch of events that truly I can not tell you what happened as it is one heck of a confusing movie. This movie was based on the novel “Leave the World Behind” by Rumaan Alam. The novel was made in 2020 and this movie was based on that novel in 2023. After reading more about the book itself there are a few changes on the film itself that are different from the book. The biggest difference between the book and the film would be the ending as the book will give you a full ending on what happens to certain people, the movie does not and comes to a sudden end. I am a little dissatisfied with the ending in the movie as it’s a huge cliffhanger, something that people will be thinking about for a long time. Overall, I think this movie was an incredible movie as it kept most of the same themes and stages from the book. I will say I hope there is a second movie made even if there isn’t a second book made. I think it’s just some self-clarity that I feel I need as well as some of the fans need.
