Easter is one of the most important times in the Christian calendar, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus and the victory of life over death. Lent is a season filled with meaning and prepared during a 40-day period that starts on Ash Wednesday and ends the day before Easter Sunday. During Lent, Christians often fast from certain foods or habits, not just to give something up but to create space for spiritual growth, reflection and renewed focus on their relationship with God.
This year, I gave up bread for Lent. Since I usually eat it a lot, it was definitely a challenge. Some of my friends gave up energy drinks, which I thought was a great way for them to practice discipline too.
Giving something up is not just about the item itself, it is about learning self-control and making space for personal and spiritual growth. I also followed my family’s tradition of not eating meat on Fridays, something we have done for as long as I can remember. Followers lean toward fish and other food categories to replace indulging in meats.
In celebration of Easter, families and friends come together to partake in an annual egg hunt. Usually the day before children and their parents dye boiled eggs with egg dying kits purchased at various stores. The adults also fill eggs with candy and if they are feeling generous they will fill them with dollar bills.
Easter can feel heavy for some because it follows a season of sacrifice and remembrance of Jesus’ suffering. At the same time, it is a celebration of hope, renewal and life. Jesus’ resurrection is a reminder that even after hardship, there is always the possibility of a fresh start.
