A Viral Misunderstanding

For anyone who has followed a celebrity or any gossip news accounts online, there is almost no day when a celebrity isn’t going through a scandal. Big or small, there is practically no escape from seeing the next celebrity being under fire for something they have done. It seems no celebrity knows this better than pop star Chappell Roan. Recently, the artist who has skyrocketed in fame over the past two years has come under fire in the media over an incident that occurred at the music festival Lollapalooza Brazil.

The event occurred on March 21st, when Brazilian football player Jorginho posted an Instagram story calling out the singer, recounting an incident that morning: his wife and 11-year-old daughter, who were staying in the same hotel as Chappell, walked past her table at breakfast.

While the two ate breakfast according to Jorginho’s post, “A large security guard came over to their table while they were still having breakfast and began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter, saying she shouldn’t allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people.”

The post quickly began to spread online, especially as it coincided with the same night Chappell Roan was set to perform at Lollapalooza herself.

The incident caused massive discourse online, as people argued about Chappell’s character for apparently sending the security guard to confront the two women. As well as people arguing over whether the events that transpired happened. The news spread like wildfire, with even the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, who had just been appointed mayor a day before, condemning the pop star online while also stating she was banned from performing at the Todo Mundo no Rio event held there too.

It was not until a day later that Chappell Roan herself made a post on Instagram commenting on the situation, “I’m sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something that you would do something and that if you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”

Here, she clarified that not only did she send the security guard to talk to the family but also that the guard was not her personal security in the first place. Almost a month since the incident, Jorginho has since released a new statement this Monday addressing the misunderstanding that transpired and thanking Chappell Roan for reaching out.

While the dust has seemed to have settled on the situation at hand, it has also opened room for discussion on how social media is very quick to lambast people without having a full, clear picture of the story. Fans of both celebrities since the first post had started coming at each other and the celebrities for what has transpired and it is only a string of incidents like this in media as a whole.
