After a wedding, becoming a movie producer, and upcoming concert appearances, it seems that this is the year of the artist, Demi Lovato. This is further exemplified with the release of her ninth studio album, It’s Not That Deep, on October 24th. Lovato announced the album early this summer in July on her Instagram account after posting several snippets of the first track, Fast. The song was then released soon after, on August 1, as the first single. Leading up to the release of It’s Not That Deep, the singer released three other singles for the album, including the tracks, Here All Night, and Kiss. The song Let You Go was also released on the same day as the album, accompanied by a music video.
Although Lovato has been releasing music for several other projects, such as her documentary and movies, this is the artist’s newest album in three years since 2022. Unlike her last musical ventures, It’s Not That Deep decides to take a step back from the rock genre and decides to lean back into the pop roots the artist originally debuted onto the music scene with.
The contents of the album lean much more into an electronic-pop music sound, which has been brought back into trend in the past year since Charli XCX’s Brat. While this may not be a new sound for the singer, as she has released similar types of songs in the past, the fact that this comes after the immense popularity of Brat may drown it out.
As stated in its own title, the contents of It’s Not That Deep are in fact not that deep. Although there are certain songs, such as Ghost and In My Head, there are fewer emotionally driven songs here compared to Lovato’s last albums. Lovato is not unknown for talking about serious issues, especially considering how she has tried to connect her own real-life struggles to her music in the past. Now, however, Lovato has gotten married since May and has embraced and expressed a lot of her past through her music and various documentaries throughout the past few years.
As stated in an interview with The Associated Press, Lovato said of the album, “And I think so much of my past was, like, ‘I want to try and write, you know, deeply emotional songs about my past’ and with this album, I was like, ‘I’m in a place where I’m having fun. I want my lyrics to reflect that, too.’”
It’s Not That Deep is, as a whole, an immensely fun album that delivers in making danceable pop hits. With the recent announcement of the It’s Not That Deep Tour next year, the live performances and stage presence of Demi Lovato herself will only further elevate the vibe of the album. With the positive reception given to the record since its release and her future creative endeavors, including touring and producing the upcoming Camp Rock 3, the course for where Lovato’s music can go is looking very bright.
