Last year, general audiences were reintroduced to the land of Oz through the arrival of Universal Studios’ adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Wicked. The film immediately became a hit among people and brought about many iconic moments, not just through the film but through its press tours and other marketing ventures. As the release of the newest installment of the series looms nearer, the marketing for this second part has also ramped up. This included NBC’s Wicked One Wonderful Night.
This event, which was filmed live at the Hollywood Dolby Theatre. The fans who attended were able to see much of the main cast of the film as they performed several songs from the iconic film. This was then recorded and aired last week, on November 7th, on NBC. During this airing, fans who did not get a chance to see the show live were able to view the show from the comfort of their own homes.
The show opened like the opening of the movie itself, with actress Ariana Grande descending from a bubble singing No One Mourns the Wicked. After this, they presented the cast, including stars Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Marissa Bode, Ethan Slater and Bowen Yang. While most of the songs performed were from the first movie, there were also appearances of songs from the second film as well. This included a performance of its opening number, Thank Goodness and sneak peeks to the two newest songs added to the film, The Girl in the Bubble and No Place Like Home.
During the night, not only were audiences able to see performances of many of the songs live on stage but they were also presented with multiple different surprises throughout as well. This included snippets of the original auditions from Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande for the movie. There were also small interview segments throughout the event with the whole cast together to discuss working on the movie together.
Wicked: One Wonderful Night presented a grand new experience into the world of Oz and has only driven more hype and attention to the release of its second entry coming next week to theatres.
