At just one month into the new year, 2026 has already proven it won’t let down amid the many trials and tribulations facing citizens. Last week, many people were inundated as they faced a huge winter storm. Starting around late last Friday, many residents of Garden City were hit by a massive wave of cold air and freezing snow.
With this came large amounts of snow blocking people’s driveways, icy roads and temperatures dropping well into the negatives during the weekend. This came just a week after another big wave of snow hit the city on the Friday prior that occurred around 3 in the afternoon. This would only soon be the precursor for even more snowfall.
During the week, weather forecasts forewarned the public as they reported the upcoming weather. With the impending weather conditions, many people took to gathering food and other supplies to prepare for the weekend. If someone didn’t stock up at the beginning of the week and waited until the day of or the day prior, they would see almost every grocery store in the area having their cash registers and self-checkout machines lined up with customers.
As the storm hit, many people saw their doors blocked by a pile of snow, their power out for a couple of minutes and several cars pulled over by the side of the highway. Snowplows and other operations occurred throughout the city to ensure that roads and other facilities were safe to use during the time.
The severe weather hit more than just Finney County, though. Several states in the country also succumbed to the forecast and many are still going through those conditions. It is important to stay warm during this time, as even though most of the snow seems to be clearing, temperatures are still low.
