This past weekend was Super Bowl 60, featuring a halftime show performed by musician Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, also known as Bad Bunny. The show opened with the stadium redecorated to resemble a sugarcane field. The music then starts up with a man holding a guitar saying, “Qué rico ser Latino, HOY SE BEBE,” leading into the song “Titi Me Preguntó.” As Bad Bunny sings, he walks through scenes showing everyday Latino life, such as people working in the fields, selling coconuts from a cart, elders playing games together, a nail technician with her customer, a snow cone cart with different flavors, someone making tacos, two boxers fighting and a vendor selling jewelry.
This then leads into the song, “Yo Perreo Sola,” showing other celebrities like Karol G and Cardi B dancing along to the song. Everyone is perreando, also known as dancing, alongside other professional dancers as Bad Bunny performs on top of a house and then falls into it, making a loud noise as he jumps into his next song, which starts as a remix and leads into “EoO.” He continues dancing with professional dancers before there is a big pause to show El Sapo Concho, the toad, which represents the endangered Puerto Rican crested toad.
Violin music soon begins to play as he performs “MONACO,” where he says his full name and shares encouraging words in Spanish:
“Mi nombre es Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, y si hoy estoy aquí en el Super Bowl 60 es porque nunca, nunca dejé de creer en mí. Tú también deberías creer en ti. Valas más de lo que piensas, créeme.” This translates to, “My name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio and if I’m here today at the Super Bowl 60, it’s because I never stopped believing in myself. You should also believe in yourself. You’re worth more than you think. Trust me” Ocasio, said.
The performance then shows a wedding that later reveals it was a real couple getting married during halftime. This transitions into a salsa version of the song “Die With a Smile,” performed by special guest Lady Gaga. After the song, Bad Bunny dances salsa with Lady Gaga to “Baile Inolvidable,” spinning into a scene with a little girl and others dancing at the wedding. The performance highlights a Latino wedding, even showing kids falling asleep on chairs during the party. He then moves into “NUEVAYol,” with more dancing while stores appear in the background, including a liquor store where he takes a shot. The scene cuts to a family of three watching Bad Bunny’s acceptance speech at the Grammys, which took place just a week ago. The musician then comes out from behind the television and hands the young child of the family the very same Grammy award he accepted.
As the music slows down, a guitar plays, featuring special guest Ricky Martin. After his part, it transitions into Bad Bunny’s song “El Apagón,” where he holds the Puerto Rican flag as the lights dim and towers appear. This leads into “Café con Ron,” where everyone dances together while running with various flags of the different countries that reside in the Americas. Bad Bunny then says, “God bless America,” and names all the American countries, making sure not to leave anyone out. He finishes the performance with “DtMF.” Throughout the halftime show, Bad Bunny performed many songs from across his career while promoting inclusivity and togetherness. He proudly showcased Puerto Rican culture and emphasized unity between Puerto Rico and America.
